Hi I'm
Carlos E. Ortega
Hi! I’m Carlos Ortega, a Software Engineer and Data Analyst from California’s Central Valley. By day, I am working on freelance projects and Civvy. By night, I work on Open Patterson, a volunteer civic tech initiative working on independent projects for the community and partnering with local nonprofits.
I consider myself a jack of all trades, with experience in Software Development, Data Analaysis/Science, and Media Production. I’ve explored different paths throughout college and beyond to hone in my skills in many disciplines.
- ⦁ Software Engineer at Amazon on their Supply Chain team where I worked on Project Santos.
- ⦁ Data Engineer at Entidad, a small social startup, where I was the first Data Engineer and data hire in general. I spent my time building out the data reporting infrastructure to support clients like the United Farmworkers Foundation.
- ⦁ Data Science Fellow at the U.S. Census Bureau where I worked on automating the maintenance of public datasets and frame matching.
- ⦁ Data Peer Advising Fellow at the UC Berkeley Library where I consulted on incorporating data science techniques into the library’s curriculum and hosted workshops on data science and data literacy.
- ⦁ NLP x Gastrointestinal Research through UCSF and UC Berkeley Data Discovery where I annotated medical notes and created a simple binary classifier to detect presence of gastrointestinal problems.
- ⦁ Associate Editor at Towards Data Science where I helped authors edit and publish their articles.
- ⦁ Executive Director, Post-Production Director, and Video Editor at CalTV, UC Berkeley’s student-run media organization.
